Clipchamp is Microsoft's free browser video editor, with AI subtitles, an AI voiceover generator and background removal. Pick it for a training video or conference recap edited in the browser, with no install. Pick something else if you need a mobile app, since Clipchamp dropped iOS in June 2026 and never shipped on Android.
Other good fits
Turning a script into a voiceover with the AI voice generator instead of recording narration yourself.
Editing straight in the browser on a lab machine where installing new desktop software needs approval.
+ Pros
Read pros
Clipchamp is a timeline video editor that runs in the browser (Edge or Chrome) with a companion Windows desktop app for the same account. It covers the parts of video editing a non-editor actually needs: trim, crop, resize, screen/camera/voice recording, AI-generated subtitles in more than 80 languages, an AI voiceover generator with hundreds of voices, and AI background removal without a green screen.
Pick it when
You have a screen recording or talk footage and need a clean, subtitled cut in under an hour.
You want narration without recording your own voice, using the AI voiceover generator from a script.
You want to resize the same video for different platforms (a presentation clip vs. a square social post) without re-editing from scratch.
− Cons
Read cons
Clipchamp has no mobile app: Microsoft retired the iOS app on 9 June 2026 and never released one for Android, so editing on a phone means switching tools entirely. The free plan tops out at 1080p export and the standard stock library; 4K and premium assets need a Microsoft 365 subscription, not a Clipchamp-only purchase. It is a browser-first editor, so very long or high-resolution source footage can be slow to work with compared to a native desktop editor, and there is no advanced colour grading or multi-track audio mixing.
Pick something else when
You need to edit on a phone: there is currently no supported mobile option from Microsoft for this tool.
You need professional colour grading, audio mixing or plugin support: use a dedicated desktop NLE instead of a browser editor.
Your organisation already licenses another video tool bundled with its productivity suite: check with IT before adding a second one.
Avoid if
You need 4K export or the premium stock library without a Microsoft 365 subscription; the free plan caps out at 1080p.
You need multi-track professional colour grading or audio mixing; Clipchamp is a straightforward timeline editor, not a professional NLE.
Workflow
Record or import footage into a new Clipchamp project → trim and arrange clips on the timeline → generate AI subtitles or an AI voiceover → apply background removal or resizing if needed → export at the resolution your plan allows → download the MP4 or send the share link, and back the project up to OneDrive before it's needed again.

What you get
Free
€0
AI subtitles, AI voiceover, free stock library, export up to 1080p, watermark-free
Premium
Included with Microsoft 365 Personal/Family
Premium stock and effects, single brand kit, export up to 4K
Both plans require signing in with a personal Microsoft account. There is nothing to install for the web version; the Windows app updates itself through the Microsoft Store. The ongoing effort is small: re-check AI subtitles for technical terms and names every time, since automatic transcription still makes mistakes on jargon.
Restrictions
Both the Free and Premium plans require a personal Microsoft account; there is no anonymous or team-managed login shown on the pricing page. 4K export, the premium stock library and the single brand kit are gated behind a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription, not sold as a standalone Clipchamp plan.
First project

Read first project
Turn a 10-minute screen recording into a 2-minute subtitled highlight clip. The book A first edited training video walks through this end to end.
Record or import a screen recording of a demo, talk or walkthrough.
Trim it down to the 3-4 moments that matter, cutting everything else.
Generate AI subtitles and correct any technical terms or names it got wrong.
Add a title card with the AI voiceover generator reading a one-sentence intro.
Export at 1080p and watch it back with the sound off to confirm the subtitles alone tell the story.
Done when the clip runs under 3 minutes, every subtitle is accurate, and it still makes sense muted.

Alternatives and trade-offs
HeyGen wins when you need an AI presenter or avatar speaking to camera, not just voiceover over your own footage.
D-ID is closer if the deliverable is a talking-head video from a script rather than an edited recording.
A dedicated desktop editor is worth the install if you are cutting long footage regularly and need finer audio and colour control than a browser tool offers.
