Decision matrix

Hugging Face app decision matrix
Overview

Hugging Face hosts open models, datasets and demo apps (Spaces), browsable and downloadable for free, with a Pro tier at $9/month for more storage and inference credits, Team at $20/user/month, Enterprise at $50/user/month. Pick it as the starting point for finding and downloading an open model; use its Python libraries to load models into your own code.

Other good fits
  • Publishing your own model, dataset or demo app (Space) for others to use or build on.
Pros
Read pros

Hugging Face is the central hub for open-source machine learning: browse, download and share models and datasets, run interactive demos (Spaces) built with Gradio or Docker, and use its Python libraries (transformers, datasets and others) to load models directly into your own code. It's free to browse and download publicly available models; paid tiers add more storage, inference credits and features for heavier or private use.

Pick it when…

  • You want to browse and compare open-weight models before deciding which one to download and run.
  • You're publishing your own model, dataset or demo app for others to find and use.
  • You want to load a model into your own Python code using a well-documented, widely used library rather than writing model-loading code from scratch.
Cons
Read cons

A model's popularity or download count on the Hub isn't proof it's the right fit for your task; always read the model card's documented intended use and limitations before choosing one. The free tier's inference credits and ZeroGPU quota are limited, so testing a large model directly through Spaces may need a paid tier or your own hardware.

Pick something else when…

  • You want a guaranteed, production-grade hosted API for a specific model. A dedicated inference provider like Groq or Cerebras is built for that.
  • You just want to run a downloaded model with a simple local interface. LM Studio or Ollama are easier for that specific job.
  • You want a chat interface on top of a downloaded model rather than raw library access. Open WebUI or AnythingLLM fit that better.

Avoid if

  • You need private repositories at scale without a paid plan; the free tier's private storage is limited.
Workflow

Search or browse the Hub for a model matching your task and licence requirements → check its model card for intended use, limitations and licence → download it directly or load it through the transformers library in your own code → publish your own model or dataset if you want to share it → move to Pro once you need more private storage, inference credits or ZeroGPU quota for testing models in Spaces.

Prices checked 23 September 2026 (pricing (opens in a new tab)):

PlanPriceWhat you get
Free$0Public model/dataset browsing, basic Spaces hosting
Pro$9/month10x private storage, 2x public storage, 20x inference credits, 8x ZeroGPU quota, personal blog
Team$20/user/monthSSO (SAML/OIDC), storage regions, audit logs, access controls
Enterprise$50/user/monthHighest limits, SCIM provisioning, advanced security, dedicated support

Browsing and downloading public models costs nothing; the paid tiers are about storage, inference credits for testing models directly on the Hub, and governance features for teams. Running a downloaded model still costs whatever hardware or cloud compute you run it on, separate from any Hugging Face subscription.

Restrictions

Private repository storage is limited on the free tier; heavier private use needs Pro or above. Team-level governance features (SSO, audit logs) require the Team or Enterprise plan, not available on Free or Pro.

First project

Documentation-based suggestion — not run here.

Search for an open model suited to a task you care about (summarisation, classification, image generation), read its model card carefully for licence and intended-use notes, then load it locally through the transformers library and run it on a made-up example to confirm it works as documented.

Done when you've successfully loaded and run one model locally, and can explain, from its model card, what it's licensed for and what its documented limitations are.
