Perplexity is an answer engine: you ask in plain words, it searches the web and writes an answer with numbered citations. It picks among several vendors' models (OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, NVIDIA) for each question, and paid plans let you choose one.
Pick it when you want sources first. Every answer cites where each claim comes from, so you can jump straight to the page.
Pick it when a question needs many searches. Deep research (Pro and above) runs a longer investigation and returns a report with its sources.
Pick it when you need premium data. Pro and Max add sources such as PitchBook, Statista and S&P Capital IQ for market and finance questions.

Citations can be wrong in small ways. A link may support part of a sentence, point to an older version, or be a secondary summary. The answer can also drop a study's scope or uncertainty.
Pick something else when you need to draft and rework long documents.ChatGPT or Claude are better writing workspaces, and both can search the web on their free plans.
Pick something else when the answer should come only from your own files. A notebook tool such as Open Notebook answers from sources you chose.
Personal plans train on your queries by default. Only the Enterprise plans promise no training on your data.

You'd paste confidential material into a personal account. Queries are used to improve Perplexity's models unless you switch that off; only Enterprise plans guarantee no training.

The developer API is a separate product with its own per-token and per-request prices (for example Sonar at $1 per million tokens plus $5–12 per 1,000 requests).
Running effort is small: an account and a browser. For personal plans, go to Settings → AI Data Usage and switch it off if you don't want your searches used to improve Perplexity's models.
Restrictions
Do not upload sensitive, third-party or regulated material until the applicable account controls and policy terms have been checked. Workspace plans and the developer API are distinct products with separate terms and usage paths.

Open the three most important citations. For each, note the author, date and the sentence that supports the claim.
Strike any claim you can't find in its source, and any source that is only a summary of another source.
Write your own five-line summary from what you read, with the original links.
