Activepieces is an open-source-core automation platform for connecting apps, APIs, AI agents, tables, and MCP servers in visual flows. It fits teams that already know its flow model and required connectors, or that want a cloud route with an option to operate the core themselves. Self-hosting makes storage, queues, credentials, upgrades, backups, and exposure the operator’s responsibility. Cloud billing uses credits per complete run rather than per step. Start with a small synthetic webhook-to-table flow, then choose hosted convenience or self-host control.
Activepieces turns a trigger, app or API actions, and optional AI logic into a visual flow that can be shared and operated as a workspace asset. The official product page (opens in a new tab) presents agents, tables, connections, API access, and MCP servers alongside ordinary flows. A learner can prototype a small operational process without writing an integration service, while retaining a path to custom APIs and self-hosting.
Hosted Activepieces removes infrastructure work. Self-hosted Activepieces gives the operator control over where the application and workflow data run, but does not remove the need to operate the surrounding system.

Success means one synthetic request produces one traceable table row, one notification, and one acknowledgement; malformed input produces no accepted row. Keep credentials and data fictional until boundaries and failure behavior are understood.
The official pricing page (opens in a new tab) describes credits as the billing unit: one credit covers a complete run regardless of step count. It displays a free allowance, paid monthly credit allowances, overage, hosting statements, and plan-gated controls; these volatile amounts should be checked on the page at decision time. Self-hosting avoids hosted-plan billing but transfers infrastructure, storage, queue, credential, backup, upgrade, and secure-ingress work to the operator. Connected APIs and AI models can add their own charges.
A visual flow does not remove operational responsibility. Self-host production requires supporting configuration and infrastructure (production setup (opens in a new tab)), and enterprise components are separately activated or licensed (enterprise licence (opens in a new tab)). A project that depends on a connector your team has not checked may spend more time adapting than delivering.
Choose n8n when the project already has n8n connector knowledge or its node, expression, and deployment patterns are the ones the team has validated. Choose Make or Zapier when the project prioritises managed SaaS setup and familiar recipe operations. Choose application code when the automation is core product logic requiring conventional tests, code review, and deployment ownership.
