Cowork is Claude's mode for bigger jobs: you describe an outcome, Claude plans it, works through files, websites and connectors, and delivers documents, spreadsheets or slides. It needs a paid plan. Since 16 September 2026 it has been merging into ordinary Claude chat, starting with Pro and Max.

Cowork brings Claude Code's agent to office work, with no terminal. Instead of answering one prompt at a time, Claude makes a plan, splits it into steps, and works through them. It reads and writes files on your computer through the desktop app, browses websites and uses your connectors. It delivers finished Excel files, PowerPoint decks or documents. Sessions run in Anthropic's cloud (in beta), so work continues when you close your laptop, and you can check progress from your phone.
Since 16 September 2026, Anthropic has been merging Cowork and chat into one Claude. On Pro and Max, the separate "Cowork" switch disappears and any conversation can take on a task. Team and Free follow later.

You'd otherwise spend an afternoon copying numbers from many files into one table.
A weekly or monthly report follows the same pattern and can be scheduled.

Cowork acts on real files, websites and connected accounts. A web page can carry hidden instructions (prompt injection), so keep Manual for anything that sends messages, spends money or touches important files, and never use "Skip all approvals" casually. Claude asks before permanently deleting any file; other changes follow the permission mode you chose. Your files are processed on Anthropic's servers, and connectors reach services from Anthropic's cloud, so servers on a private network aren't reachable. Results still need checking.

A process must run identically every time and leave a clear log: n8n.

Cowork shares your plan's usage pool with chat and Claude Code, and long tasks use it fast. Auto mode uses more of your limit than Manual, because Claude checks each action. Scheduled tasks keep drawing on your allowance until you stop them. Tasks that touch local files or your browser need the desktop app open. Team and Enterprise admins decide which connectors, web search and auto-approval people may use.
Restrictions
The documented project interface is product and account dependent. Do not treat a successful-looking response as permission to overwrite source files or publish a document.

Input: five fictional supplier quotes for lab consumables as PDF or Word files. Ask Claude in chat to create them, with different prices, delivery times and one missing value.
Put the quotes in a new folder called cowork-test. Never point a first task at your originals.
In the Claude desktop app, start a Cowork task (or any conversation, if you have the merged version) and keep the permission mode on Manual.
Ask: "Read the quotes in cowork-test and build an Excel comparison with supplier, item, unit price, delivery time and validity. Flag missing values. Don't change or delete the source files."
Approve each file action as Claude asks.
Open the spreadsheet and check three cells against the source quotes.
Done when: the spreadsheet opens, your three checks match, the missing value is flagged, and the five source files are unchanged.
