Verdict: a good first coding editor if you want to watch the agent work and approve each change. Pick it over Devin Desktop when a $60 middle plan suits your use. Turn on privacy mode before you open work code, and keep every project under Git.
Other good fits
Small teams that need one admin switch for privacy mode and a middle plan between $20 and $200.
+ Pros

Cursor is a code editor with an AI agent built in. You describe a change in plain English, the agent reads your project, edits the files and shows you a diff to accept or reject. It can also run commands, work in the cloud while you do something else, and review pull requests (Bugbot). Since August 2026 Cursor belongs to SpaceX, and its included models are Cursor's own: Grok and Composer.
Pick it when…
You'll work in the editor yourself and want the agent as a helper at your elbow, not a black box.
You expect to outgrow $20 a month but not need $200. The $60 Pro+ plan fills that gap.
A team admin needs to enforce privacy mode for everyone.
− Cons
Read cons
The agent can change many files and run commands on your computer. Work only in a folder under Git so you can undo anything. Privacy mode is not on for personal accounts until you switch it on; with it on, Cursor guarantees your code isn't used for training by Cursor or its model providers. If your organisation cares where code goes, note that the default models now come from SpaceX's AI arm.
Pick something else when…
You'd rather hand whole tasks to agents and check back later.Devin Desktop shows local and cloud agents on one board and can run other agents inside it.
You're following the curriculum's coding track.OpenCode is the agent taught in T08-L04, works with many model providers and costs nothing beyond model use.
Your code lives on GitHub and your company already pays for it.GitHub Copilot may already be approved.
Avoid if
You follow the curriculum coding track or want an open-source agent with your own model choice; use OpenCode.
Your organisation must control which company the default models come from.
Workflow
Open a repository, ask for a plan before editing, constrain the requested files, inspect the diff and run the repository's normal checks before committing.
Cost
Read cost
Prices checked 23 September 2026 (pricing (opens in a new tab), USD per month, excl. tax; yearly billing saves 20%):
Central billing, team-wide privacy mode, SSO, Bugbot
Every plan includes a set amount of model use. Cursor's own models (Grok, Composer) draw on a larger included pool; OpenAI, Anthropic and Google models draw on a separate pool at API prices. Past the allowance, on-demand use is billed afterwards, so a busy week can cost more than the plan price. Set a spending limit in the dashboard. The editor updates itself; the running effort is reviewing diffs and keeping privacy mode on.
Restrictions
Model capability and context limits vary. Integrations require separate authorization and should not be enabled merely because they are available.

Add a small feature to a script you already use, for example a CSV-cleaning script from your lab or office.
Put the script in its own folder and turn it into a Git repository, so every change can be undone.
Open Settings → Privacy and switch privacy mode on before opening any work code.
Ask the agent: "Add an option to skip empty rows. Explain your plan before you change anything."
Read the plan, let it make the change, and read the diff line by line.
Run the script on a small made-up file with two empty rows and check the output.
Done when the new option works on your test file, the diff touches only the lines you expected, and you committed the change with a message you wrote yourself.
