Decision matrix

GitHub Copilot app decision matrix
Overview

Verdict: the natural pick if your code is on GitHub and your organisation already pays for it; Pro at $10 a month is the cheapest paid coding agent here. Hand it small, well-described issues and review every pull request before you merge. If your code isn't on GitHub, choose another tool.

Other good fits
  • Organisations that already pay for GitHub and can switch on Copilot Business for $19 per seat.
Pros
Read pros

GitHub Copilot is GitHub's AI helper for code. It completes lines as you type in your editor, answers questions in a chat panel, and on paid plans runs a cloud agent: you assign it a GitHub issue, it works on a branch in its own temporary environment and opens a pull request for you to review. Pro plans can also start Claude Code and Codex from inside GitHub.

Pick it when…

  • Your scripts or analysis code already live on GitHub, and you want the agent to work where your issues and reviews are.
  • Your organisation already pays for GitHub, so Copilot Business may be one admin click away.
  • You want a cheap start: $10 a month, with unlimited code completions on every paid plan.
Cons
Read cons

The agent changes code on a branch and runs your project's commands. That's safe only if someone reviews every pull request before merging. It is built around GitHub: if your code lives elsewhere, most of the agent features don't apply. Credit costs vary by model, so a heavy week on a premium model can use up a month's allowance.

Pick something else when…

  • You want to work in a desktop editor and watch each change: Cursor.
  • You're following the curriculum's coding track or want a free, open-source agent with your own model choice: OpenCode.
  • You already pay for ChatGPT: Codex comes with it.

Avoid if

  • Nobody can review pull requests before they are merged.
  • You need a predictable bill but plan to use premium models heavily; credits run out faster on them.
Workflow

Define one small issue, provide acceptance criteria, let Copilot propose or make a branch change, then inspect the diff and run the repository's normal review process.

Cost
Read cost

Prices checked 23 September 2026 (plans (opens in a new tab), USD per month). Since 1 June 2026 all plans bill agent and chat use in AI credits (1 credit = $0.01):

PlanPriceCredits included per month
Free$0Small allowance, limited chat and agent use
Pro$101,500
Pro+$397,000, premium models
Max$10020,000, priority access to premium models
Business$19 per seat1,900 per user
Enterprise$39 per seat3,900 per user

Code completions don't use credits and stay unlimited on paid plans. What a chat or agent task costs depends on the model and how much text it processes. When credits run out you can upgrade, wait for the monthly reset, or set a budget for extra use; no budget is set by default, which keeps surprises off your bill. Business and Enterprise admins must switch the cloud agent on first.

Restrictions

Cloud-agent entry points and available planning/iteration features vary by integration and plan. A pull request remains a review artifact, not proof that the change is safe to merge.

Read first project

Let the cloud agent fix one small, well-described problem in a repository you own.

  1. Pick a repository with a README, for example the one holding your group's data-cleaning scripts.
  2. Write an issue with a clear goal and a check: "Add a section to the README explaining how to run clean.py on a CSV. Done when a new colleague can follow it without asking."
  3. Assign the issue to Copilot and wait for the pull request.
  4. Read the changes, ask for fixes in a pull-request comment with @copilot, and follow the new README yourself on a made-up CSV.
  5. Merge only when the instructions work.

Done when the README section works for someone who has never run the script, and the pull request touched nothing else.
