Decision matrix

Alibaba Open Code Review runtime decision matrix
Overview

Open Code Review is Alibaba's free command-line reviewer for Git changes. It combines fixed rules with a model you choose and writes line-level findings, in CI or inside coding agents. It is actively maintained and cheap to run, but it's a developer tool: you need a terminal, an API key and someone to judge the findings.

Other good fits
  • Teams that want automated review comments in GitHub Actions or GitLab CI with their own model provider.
Pros
Read pros

Open Code Review is Alibaba's open-source command-line reviewer. Point it at your Git changes and it asks a model of your choice for line-by-line comments: bugs, security problems such as SQL injection, and risky edits. It mixes fixed rules with an AI pass and writes the findings as text or JSON. It plugs into GitHub Actions, GitLab CI and Gerrit, and into coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and OpenCode.

Pick it when…

  • Someone in your group already writes code with an AI agent and you want a second, independent check before merging.
  • You want automatic review comments on every pull request in GitHub or GitLab.
  • You want the reviewer to use a model and provider you choose.
Cons

It's a developer tool: you need a terminal, npm and a model API key. Findings are suggestions and can be wrong, so someone who understands the code still has to judge them. Your code goes to the model provider you pick.

Pick something else when…

  • You want review built into the service where your code already lives: GitHub Copilot reviews pull requests on GitHub.
  • You already use Cursor: its Bugbot reviews pull requests without another tool (Cursor).
  • You don't write code yourself yet: start with T08-L01 before a review pipeline.

Avoid if

  • You want review inside a service you already pay for, such as GitHub Copilot or Cursor Bugbot.
Requirements

Use the official CLI in a Git repository; the checked README requires Git 2.41 or newer. Configure a provider and model before model-backed review. The CLI is Apache-2.0, while model or host-agent costs are separate.

First run

Documentation-based suggestion — not run here.

Run one review on a change you made yourself.

  1. Install it: npm install -g @alibaba-group/open-code-review (needs Node and Git 2.41 or newer).
  2. Configure a model provider as the README describes. Start with a repository whose code may be sent to that provider.
  3. Make a small change in a script, for example add a function that reads a file path typed in by the user.
  4. Run ocr review and read each finding next to the diff.
  5. Decide for each finding: real problem, harmless, or wrong.

Done when you have sorted every finding into one of those three groups and fixed the real ones.

Integration

The CLI can emit JSON for a downstream review artifact. Provider configuration determines where model-backed code context goes; local CLI execution alone is not evidence that inference is local.

Check the result

Expect a JSON review artifact. Compare every finding with the change and retain human review; a finding is not a confirmed defect.

Further review notes & alternatives

Costs and operating effort

Prices checked 23 September 2026: free software (Apache 2.0); you pay for the model. It runs on your own laptop or CI runner, so no extra machine is needed. Each review sends the changed code and some surrounding context to the provider you configure, so cost grows with the size of the change. Alibaba reports it uses far fewer tokens than a general-purpose agent doing the same review. The running effort is keeping the npm package updated (it releases often; v1.12.9 came out on 22 September 2026) and tuning rules so the comments stay worth reading.

Alternatives and trade-offs

  • GitHub Copilot wins when the team already pays for it and works in GitHub pull requests.
  • Cursor wins when review should happen in the editor you already use.
  • Greptile wins when you want a hosted review service that indexes your whole codebase rather than a CLI you run yourself.
